Technology company Huawei has introduced its new Mate 40 smartphone. The company claims that it has a better processor than Apple’s new iPhone 12.
The company says that the processor of Mate 40 Huawei smartphone is based on the ‘Five Nanometer’ technique. It is similar to the chip used in the iPhone. Huawei also claims that Huawei’s new Mate 40 smartphones processor has billions of transistors installed, which is 30% more than Apple’s A14 processor.
The company claims that due to these features, their Huawei Mate 40 smartphones is ‘more powerful’ than the iPhone 12.
However, Huawei has said it lacks the chips used in the Mate 40. Because the chip was being exported from the United States. Now the United States has imposed trade sanctions on China since September this year.
This means that if the company runs out of these processors called Karen 9000, it will not be able to make more Mate 40 smartphones after a while.
Currently, only two companies in the world have the capability to make a five nanometer chip. These include Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung.
Due to US sanctions, both companies are barred from sending the chip or any of its semiconductor products to Chinese company Huawei. Same is with any product that uses ‘American technology and software’.
The United States has said the decision was based on national security. but Huawei said it did not pose a threat to the United States.
During an online presentation, Huawei’s Consumer Devices Officer Richard Yu acknowledged that the company was facing significant difficulties due to the US trade embargo.
Huawei faces several other sanctions from Washington. The company has not introduced a smartphone in the United States since mid-2019, and many of its phones, including the Play Store, cannot use Google services.
Despite all this, Huawei’s phones are the third best-selling in the world and the largest smartphone company in China.
“Huawei ranks high in China and people are more aware of the brand,” said technology expert Mo Jia.
He says demand for the Mate 40 is expected to be high in China. However, Huawei’s new phone will be limited due to the lack of other parts, including the Karen chip, during the US sanctions.
Highlights of the Huawei Mate 40 smartphone
The cheapest model of Huawei Mate 40 is USD 1049. It has a 6.5 inch OLED screen. Three of its more expensive models cost up to 2, 2,708 and feature a 6.8-inch screen.
Each phone has a refresh rate of 90 Hz, which means that 90 frames per second can be played on the phone screen. That’s more than Apple’s new iPhone 12 and Samsung’s S20 series.
Mr Yu says the technology makes the screen work better and the phone’s battery lasts longer.
- The cheapest model has only one camera for taking selfies and has three rear cameras (wide angle, ultra wide angle and telephoto.
- The Mate 40 Pro has a ‘3D sensor’ for face unlock and its camera is better than the first model
- The rear fourth camera in the Mate 40 Pro Plus aims for ‘super zoom’ and can take good pictures with less focus than the fifth camera.
- The Mate 40 Porsche Design RS has a ‘thermometer’ that can monitor local temperature.
Currently only the Pro model is introduced outside of China and is priced at US 1, 1,297.
The Ultra Wide Angle camera of this phone has half of the ‘free form lens’ to eliminate the problem of bad pictures.
Huawei’s new smartphone has introduced an advanced feature that allows the phone’s screen to turn on when it knows someone is watching it. According to the company, this will reduce battery problems.
Lack of apps
Huawei says that the Karen 9000 chip is equipped with FiveG and its battery can last longer than other phones.
The battery of the Mate 40 Pro is 25% longer than the Samsung Note 20 Ultra Plus.
He says that its processing power is higher Its two cameras has capacity of slow motion video at 240 frames P/S.
The company says that this smart phone has better work on games and graphics due to its chips
However, many apps, including Call of Duty Mobile, will not work on Huawei Mate 40 smartphones because they’re available on the Google Play Store as this phone isn’t allowed to use Google’s services. One of the other drawbacks is that users will not be able to make purchases in many apps.
However, even though Huawei does not have access to the Play Store, these apps can be installed from its own Petal app gallery. But some apps aren’t even there.
APPS WHICH ARE’NT INSTALLED ON IT.
EBay, Tesco and other British grocery apps cannot be installed on Huawei’s phones. The Sky News app is also not available for Huawei phones but the company says it is working on it.
A company spokesman told the BBC: “Politically, Huawei is in a situation where it has to end its dependence on Google and give consumers alternatives.”
“There’s more room for what Huawei has done with its app gallery, but it’s commendable.”
If an app is not available, users can add it to Huawei’s ‘wish list’. So that work on it can begin as soon as possible.
Technology expert says the camera design and chip performance in Huawei’s phones are impressive, and despite the company’s best efforts in the app gallery, many flaws remain.
He says users have to work hard to find these apps on Petal Search. This is fine for Huawei enthusiasts but can be a hindrance for the general public.
